Insurance

We have finally wrapped up our insurance claims (yes, plural) on the house. The first was due to the kitchen sink. We believed that the water/mold in our closet came as a result of that leak. After the restoration service dried out our home I found water in the closet again. So I initiated a second claim after having a plumber come out and diagnose the problem: water traveling through our shower wall. The tile job was badly done when the previous owners installed the whirlpool tub and we get to deal with the damage. We have been fortunate, however, because we received nearly $5,000 for both claims. We have about 120 square feet of floor in the kitchen to replace and we have to have the complete surround tile job done in the master bathroom.

I was given $650 toward the repair of the master closet, however I put the square of drywall into the hole from which it was cut and bought a remnant of carpet and a utility knife to replace the carpeting that was torn out. I spent a grand total of $30 on the closet and we’ve already moved back into it. I have the flooring I need for the kitchen for a total of about $250 and I’ve spent about $200 on the bathroom to redecorate it. I have bought a shower curtain and hooks, some matching accessories and a large mirror for over the sinks to replace the double ovals that we had. I got some new fixtures for the shower/tub to be installed when the tile is done. I still need some towels and a couple more accessories. I am going to pick out paint and have the room painted by whoever does the labor in the tub for me. If there’s any money leftover after the work is done I’ll probably buy a new light fixture and some new hardware for the cabinets to match the new decor.

I have run most of this by Matt as I’ve decided that I wanted it and on Friday he uttered the words that gave him major brownie points: “Do whatever makes you happy in that bathroom.” Aaawwwwww . . .

Back to school?!

As of today I have an updated FAFSA and SAR being sent to the University of Memphis. Yes, perhaps as early as this summer I may become a tiger. I have applied to the U., paid my fee, ordered my transcripts, submitted my FAFSA, and plan to make an appointment with an advisor that can help me to find the shortest route to the nearest bachelor’s degree. Surprisingly, I’m a bit nervous. I didn’t think I would be, but I am . . .

On another note: I spoke to the insurance agent handling our claim for repairing our flooring after the water works in our kitchen recently. We should know something tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ve discovered today that our closet is again wet. This is AFTER the restoration service has dried it out — that means we have more water trouble than we thought. I’ll be calling the plumber tomorrow to come over and tear out my bathroom wall to see what’s wrong with that plumbing. I know we are going to open the wall to find a black, yucky mold mess. I am going to quarantine the room with plastic and duct tape and wear a mask whilst I spray the begeezus out of the walls with a bleach solution. Pray for our health during this time, and also our pocketbook!!!

Changes are coming

My director announced today, publicly, that she has been offered the lab director job at the local children’s hospital. She says that if she accepts the position and submits her resignation we may not see her again. Apparently our company dismisses its management employees immediately upon receipt of a resignation. I also happen to know that my manager is looking to sell her house and move her family back “home.” In addition to these, our upper administration has just approved a “lab supervisor” position that was just recently filled. My prediction is that she will become the director (which will be a good thing for us) and then there will be two slots to fill.

A co-worker and I talked for about 20 minutes sitting in her vehicle after having clocked out for the day this afternoon. She flattered me when she said that she thinks I should be the choice for the lab supervisor. There’s just one problem: I don’t have a bachelor’s degree. She also said she’s trying to talk the newly appointed supervisor, who would be director, into rewriting the job description as a “technical supervisor” with a minimum requirement of holding a license as a Medical Technologist (which I have). I am excited about the little bitty possibility of this. I have no idea if it’s even feasible, however, in addition to all of this I have been given the go-ahead by my husband to start up a conversation with a recruiter from the University of Memphis to see if there is a degree that could fit into my 145 hours of undergraduate coursework (for which I only have an associate’s degree).

Anyway, keep me in your prayers, because this is exciting to me and I am so flattered that I am being talked about with regard to management. My director, by the way, gave me the umpteenth lecture today on getting my degree when I went in to congratulate her and thank her for what she has done for me and for our lab. Lisa Matthews: Baptist-Desoto will miss you!!

Headache is still here

Well, my doctor’s office called me yesterday regarding blood work and in the course of the conversation I informed the nurse that not only was my headache not gone — it was worse. She asked me to hold a moment and when she returned she asked if I could please come in for another shot, right then. I went and received not one, but two more shots. They had to both go into the same hip because the injection site from one of the shots I received on Monday was so bruised and swollen. Today, I still have the headache . . . I shall not be informing them of that fact lest I be asked to provide my bahootie for dart throwing practice yet again.

Oh yes, and my iron level is still lower than it should be from when I gave birth to Rebekah 3 years ago. I am to be taking iron again. Hopefully it will go up and my energy level will, too!!

Two shots and a blood draw . . .

Well, I have been to the doctor today to have the long-awaited answer to my question of whether or not I may have fibromyalgia. And the answer is . . . NOT. Yea!! While I am glad that I do not have that condition I am back to wondering why I have some of the bothersome symptoms that I do. After listening to me thoughtfully, examining me carefully, answering questions that I had, and going over reports of previous visits and procedures my doctor determined that there is definitely a problem with the balance of serotonin in my brain. Serotonin is known to modulate mood, emotion, sleep, and appetite. The primary symptoms that I have that are a concern to my physician are anxiety, migraine headaches, and irritible bowel syndrome; the “minor” problems include mild insomnia, fatigue (ya think?), and widespread aches and pains. Tomorrow marks two straight weeks that I’ve been dealing with my most recent migraine, which is why I was finally motivated to go see him. I got two shots, one in each side of my hiney, that are supposed to mix up the marbles in my head a little to work on the headache that I’ve had for so long and I received a prescription for a “potent” muscle relaxer to take each night at bedtime. This is to improve the quality of my sleep. My doctor hopes that if I begin to sleep well and through the night the serotonin balancing medicine that I have already been taking for 2 years will be better able to make a difference and my other symptoms should improve. He had blood drawn to check my numbers for anemia (fatigue) and iron (fatigue), and also just general blood chemical health. I am to return in 6 weeks to go over how I do between now and then. For now, I just hope my booty stops hurting!! Here’s a cute picture of my youngest, Rebekah, who just turned 3 years old!

Here goes, again

I am up and running on wordpress. We’ll see how well I do on this one. My yahoo 360 page hasn’t seen me in months. Hopefully I’ll find time to work on this and have a place to keep my family updated on what’s going on with us.
