Insurance

We have finally wrapped up our insurance claims (yes, plural) on the house. The first was due to the kitchen sink. We believed that the water/mold in our closet came as a result of that leak. After the restoration service dried out our home I found water in the closet again. So I initiated a second claim after having a plumber come out and diagnose the problem: water traveling through our shower wall. The tile job was badly done when the previous owners installed the whirlpool tub and we get to deal with the damage. We have been fortunate, however, because we received nearly $5,000 for both claims. We have about 120 square feet of floor in the kitchen to replace and we have to have the complete surround tile job done in the master bathroom.

I was given $650 toward the repair of the master closet, however I put the square of drywall into the hole from which it was cut and bought a remnant of carpet and a utility knife to replace the carpeting that was torn out. I spent a grand total of $30 on the closet and we’ve already moved back into it. I have the flooring I need for the kitchen for a total of about $250 and I’ve spent about $200 on the bathroom to redecorate it. I have bought a shower curtain and hooks, some matching accessories and a large mirror for over the sinks to replace the double ovals that we had. I got some new fixtures for the shower/tub to be installed when the tile is done. I still need some towels and a couple more accessories. I am going to pick out paint and have the room painted by whoever does the labor in the tub for me. If there’s any money leftover after the work is done I’ll probably buy a new light fixture and some new hardware for the cabinets to match the new decor.

I have run most of this by Matt as I’ve decided that I wanted it and on Friday he uttered the words that gave him major brownie points: “Do whatever makes you happy in that bathroom.” Aaawwwwww . . .

Back to school?!

As of today I have an updated FAFSA and SAR being sent to the University of Memphis. Yes, perhaps as early as this summer I may become a tiger. I have applied to the U., paid my fee, ordered my transcripts, submitted my FAFSA, and plan to make an appointment with an advisor that can help me to find the shortest route to the nearest bachelor’s degree. Surprisingly, I’m a bit nervous. I didn’t think I would be, but I am . . .

On another note: I spoke to the insurance agent handling our claim for repairing our flooring after the water works in our kitchen recently. We should know something tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ve discovered today that our closet is again wet. This is AFTER the restoration service has dried it out — that means we have more water trouble than we thought. I’ll be calling the plumber tomorrow to come over and tear out my bathroom wall to see what’s wrong with that plumbing. I know we are going to open the wall to find a black, yucky mold mess. I am going to quarantine the room with plastic and duct tape and wear a mask whilst I spray the begeezus out of the walls with a bleach solution. Pray for our health during this time, and also our pocketbook!!!
